Rheinmetall and General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems are exploring joint production of a precision-guided artillery munition as allied militaries look to expand long-range strike capabilities and replenish inventories.
Under the deal, the companies will assess co-production opportunities for Vektrex, a maneuvering 155mm precision-guided munition designed for use with existing NATO-standard artillery systems. They will also examine how to manufacture the munition at scale through a transatlantic industrial network.
Vektrex is compatible with both 39- and 52-caliber 155mm artillery systems already in service across allied militaries, reducing the need for new launchers or supporting infrastructure.
The munition is designed to operate in contested and GPS-degraded environments. Its glide-based aerodynamic design extends engagement ranges beyond those of conventional artillery shells while offering a lower-cost alternative to tactical missile systems.
Rheinmetall’s role would center on manufacturing expertise and access to NATO-compliant production facilities, while General Atomics brings the munition technology and development experience.
“European and allied armed forces require long-range strike capabilities that integrate rapidly, scale efficiently, and remain sustainable through resilient multinational industrial networks,” Rheinmetall’s Weapon and Ammunition Division CEO Roman Koehne said.
Partnerships on Precision-Guided Munitions
The Rheinmetall-General Atomics agreement follows a series of partnerships aimed at expanding production and development of precision-guided weapons.
In June, France’s Safran and Turkey’s Baykar agreed to expand cooperation on unmanned aerial systems, including the integration of precision-guided capabilities for drone platforms and air-to-ground missions.
The move follows a May agreement between EDGE and Baykar to integrate Al Tariq precision-guided munitions onto the Bayraktar Akinci combat drone.
Earlier, in November 2025, India and Safran launched a joint venture to produce the Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range precision-guided air-to-ground weapon domestically.
