Norwegian defense company Kongsberg has completed its acquisition of California-based Zone 5 Technologies, adding a manufacturer of low-cost, mass-produced missiles to its growing portfolio of air defense and strike systems.
The deal gives Kongsberg a 90 percent stake in Zone 5, a company known for developing affordable missile systems such as the Rusty Dagger long-range strike missile and the White Spike air defense interceptor.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Kongsberg CEO Eirik Lie said that Zone 5 contributes a “distinct capability” to the firm’s portfolio, especially with its proven track record of “rapid production, highly scalable, and affordable missiles.”
“Recent conflicts have demonstrated the critical role of high-volume defense capabilities,” he said. “This is exactly what Europe needs.”
Zone 5 will continue operating as an independent subsidiary. Founder and CEO Thomas Akers and the current management team will remain in place and retain ownership stakes following the transaction.
Acquisitions by Kongsberg
The Zone 5 deal is the latest in a series of acquisitions that Kongsberg has used to expand its defense, maritime, and space technology businesses.
In January 2025, Kongsberg acquired Naxys Technologies to strengthen its capabilities in advanced sensors and underwater robotics.
Earlier, in July 2022, Kongsberg agreed to buy Lithuanian small satellite mission integrator NanoAvionics, expanding its space portfolio to include small satellite manufacturing technologies and products.
