Pratt & Whitney Canada to Overhaul US T-6 Trainer Engines Under $1B Deal
Pratt & Whitney Canada has secured a $1-billion contract from V2X to overhaul more than 750 PT6A-68 turboprop engines used on the US military’s T-6 Texan II trainer aircraft under the Joint Primary Aircraft Training System.
The work will be carried out under V2X’s T-6 Contractor Operated and Maintained Base Supply program, which provides sustainment support for the trainer fleet.
Engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities will be performed at Pratt & Whitney Canada’s facility in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
The agreement covers the next nine years and supports ongoing efforts to maintain the operational readiness of the US military’s T-6 training fleet.
The Bridgeport site has supported PT6A-68 engine maintenance for more than 40 years and previously carried out the same refurbishment program for the US government.
T-6 Texan II
Developed by Raytheon Aircraft and based on the Pilatus PC-9 Mk II, the T-6 Texan II is a single-engine, two-seat turboprop trainer used by the US Air Force and US Navy for primary pilot training.
Powered by a 1,100-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68 engine, the aircraft is designed to teach basic flying skills before pilots transition to more advanced platforms.
The trainer has a maximum speed of 515 kilometers (320 miles) per hour, a range of 900 nautical miles (1,667 kilometers/1,036 miles), and a service ceiling of 31,000 feet (9,449 meters).
It can climb at 3,100 feet (945 meters) per minute, reaching 18,000 feet (5,486 meters) in under six minutes.
