Velo3D Expands US Metal 3D Printing Capacity for Defense, Aerospace 

Velo3D is expanding its US manufacturing footprint with a new 288,747-square-foot (26,825-square-meter) production campus in Livermore, California, to increase metal additive manufacturing capacity for the aerospace, defense, and energy sectors.

Expected to become operational later this year, the facility will serve as the company’s primary production center.

Velo3D’s existing headquarters in Fremont, California, will continue to focus on research and development, engineering, and prototyping.

The expansion is expected to significantly increase the company’s manufacturing capacity as demand for 3D-printed metal components continues to grow.

According to Velo3D, the investment reflects a broader shift among customers from prototype development and qualification to large-scale manufacturing, particularly in the aerospace and defense sectors.

“We believe additive manufacturing should be accessible, scalable, and production-ready,” said Michelle Sidwell, Chief Revenue Officer of Velo3D. 

“Customers are increasingly seeking flexible ways to adopt additive manufacturing without the burden of significant upfront investment or manufacturing risk.

Production Expansion

The Livermore campus will provide nearly 10 million cubic feet (283,000 cubic meters) of production volume.

The site is designed to accommodate more than 40 large-format metal 3D printers at launch, with infrastructure to support over 100 systems as production expands.

In addition to additive manufacturing, the facility will house machine assembly, post-processing, and production of mission-critical components, allowing a larger share of manufacturing to be completed at a single location.

The additional capacity is expected to support domestic manufacturing, shorten component qualification timelines, and strengthen supply chains for complex metal parts.

According to the company, the Livermore campus and Fremont headquarters will operate more than 125 metal additive manufacturing systems together, forming one of North America’s largest production networks.
