Diehl Defence has handed over the first IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense system to the Estonian Air Defence Wing at Ämari Air Base, extending the country’s air defense reach beyond its existing short-range systems.
The system can engage aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles at ranges of up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) and altitudes of up to 20 kilometers (12.4 miles).
A single IRIS-T SLM fire unit typically includes multiple launchers, a radar, and a tactical control center, supported by vehicles for reloading, maintenance, and spare parts.
The system’s mobility enables rapid redeployment in response to shifting threats and operational demands.
Estonia procured three IRIS-T SLM systems in 2023 as part of its largest-ever defense investment, with the remaining units expected to be delivered next year.
Estonian Air Force Commander Brigadier General Riivo Valge said the system’s key advantage is its high engagement altitude, which prevents adversaries from simply flying above coverage.
“When this system is deployed in the field, the enemy has to take it into account and find alternative trajectories,” he said.
“Its tactical agility forces those decisions under time pressure, increasing the likelihood of errors we can exploit.”
Proven System
The IRIS-T SLM offers high tactical mobility and 360-degree coverage, enabling simultaneous engagement of multiple targets with a relatively small crew.
According to Diehl Defence, the system has demonstrated an interception success rate of over 95 percent in operational use in Ukraine.
“IRIS-T is a medium-range air defence system that has proven itself in Ukraine, and it brings our air defense to a new level, giving us the ability to engage an adversary from significantly greater distances and altitudes than with our existing short-range systems,” Estonian Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur said.
“The war in Ukraine has clearly shown that a strong air defence is a central part of national defence, essential for protecting our people, our defence forces’ units, and critical infrastructure.”
European Sky Shield Initiative
The procurement is part of the European Sky Shield Initiative, a German-led air defense framework launched in 2022 and now involving 23 member states.
Eight participants have selected the IRIS-T SLM, benefiting from a joint procurement structure that streamlines acquisition and improves cooperation in training, maintenance, and logistics.
“The delivery to Estonia shows that we can deliver even under the significant pressure that the European air defence market is currently experiencing,” Diehl Defence CEO Helmut Rauch stated.
“With every system we deliver, we strengthen our partners’ defence capabilities, make a measurable contribution to the NATO alliance’s security architecture, and thereby also help protect the Estonian people.”
