Anduril Industries has teamed up with Elbit Systems of America to pursue the US Army’s Self-Propelled Howitzer Modernization (SPH-M) program, adding autonomy and battlefield networking capabilities to Elbit’s SIGMA artillery system.
The partnership brings together Elbit America’s experience in artillery and vehicle manufacturing with Anduril’s software, command-and-control, and autonomy technologies.
Under the arrangement, the companies will offer the SIGMA Mobile Tactical Cannon, a wheeled 155mm self-propelled howitzer designed to provide long-range fires from a highly mobile platform.
If selected, the system would be integrated with army command-and-control networks using Anduril’s software and edge computing technologies. The team also plans to incorporate Anduril’s Lattice platform into future variants of SIGMA, enabling greater automation and digital connectivity.
Elbit America CEO Luke Savoie said that SIGMA is built in the US with a fully domestic supply chain, adding that it “is a combat-proven system that provides the modernization and reliability the army needs now.”
US Army’s Howitzer Competition
The SPH-M program, formerly known as the Next Generation Howitzer program, aims to replace the Extended Range Cannon Artillery effort, which was canceled in 2024 after failing during the prototyping phase.
It marks the army’s fourth attempt to field a new self-propelled howitzer for armored brigade combat teams.
According to 2025 budget documents, the system is intended to provide mobile, survivable, and longer-range fire support against a wide range of current and future threats through 2040 and beyond.
