Netherlands Is Giving Its Future Frigates a 12-Meter Drone Boat Wingman
The Royal Netherlands Navy is equipping its future anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigates with a new uncrewed surface vessel (USV) designed to detect and track enemy submarines in contested waters.
The 12-meter (39-foot) drone boat will carry Thales’ Compact FLASH dipping sonar, which can operate at depths of up to 750 meters (2,461 feet).
Using a low-frequency band and broadband architecture, the sonar enables long-range submarine detection while distinguishing targets from underwater acoustic clutter.
