LightPath Technologies has received an $11-million follow-on order to supply infrared cameras for counter-drone systems from an undisclosed customer.
The order comes from an unnamed global technology company and builds on previous contracts between the two firms.
According to LightPath, the infrared cameras will be used in systems designed to detect and track unmanned aerial systems for defense and public safety applications.
As part of the program, LightPath plans to gradually replace germanium optical lenses with its proprietary BlackDiamond material, an infrared optical material developed by the company for thermal imaging systems.
Germanium has long been the standard material used in infrared optics because it allows thermal radiation to pass through the lens, enabling infrared cameras to detect heat.
However, global supplies have become more uncertain following China’s export restrictions on germanium as the world’s largest producer.
According to LightPath, BlackDiamond is designed to perform the same function as germanium while reducing reliance on the material.
The company said the transition will take place gradually throughout the program.
Latest Contracts
The latest award follows several defense-related contracts secured by LightPath.
In February, the company received a $9.6-million contract from an existing customer to supply cooled infrared cameras for defense and security applications.
The systems incorporate integrated cooling technology to reduce their thermal signature while maintaining imaging performance.
Production is taking place at LightPath’s facilities in Florida and New Hampshire, with deliveries scheduled through this year.
In 2025, LightPath, through its subsidiary G5 Infrared, also secured a $2.2-million contract from L3Harris Technologies to provide infrared cameras for the US Navy’s Shipboard Panoramic Electro-Optic/Infrared program.
The cameras are intended to support shipboard detection and tracking of threats, including anti-ship cruise missiles, fast attack craft, and drones.
