The US and Morocco are planning a new military center designed to prepare African forces for drone operations, contested environments, and emerging technologies.
US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces signed a memorandum of understanding to pursue the Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC).
Planned for Tan-Tan in southern Morocco by 2030, AMTEC will include a training space, a drone academy, and an innovation hub for low-cost counterterrorism systems.
The training range will support exercises across the electromagnetic spectrum and in contested environments, while the drone academy will train personnel in small unmanned aircraft operations, including strike and intelligence missions.
AFRICOM commander General Dagvin Anderson said the partnership represents a great opportunity for regional stakeholders to “experiment, innovate and develop scalable, adaptable solutions across emerging technologies.”
Morocco Expands Multinational Military Training
The planned center builds on Morocco’s growing role as a venue for multinational military training and experimentation.
In March, the US Army announced plans to introduce drone training during African Lion 2026, beginning in Morocco with two courses for 16 participants focused on integration and hands-on flight operations across multiple systems.
The training forms part of a broader push to incorporate AI, robotics, and advanced digital systems into the exercise, including a field-based testing and innovation center embedded in ongoing drills, as announced in January.
The effort builds on earlier technology-focused training, including electronic warfare instruction conducted by US and Moroccan forces during African Lion 2024.
