Poland has formally proposed the establishment of a permanent US military base on its territory.
According to Politico, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz presented the proposal to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, with discussions between the two sides ongoing. No final decision has been announced.
The proposal comes amid growing security concerns in Europe, as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues and questions persist over Washington’s long-term military presence on the continent.
Last month, US President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy an additional 5,000 US troops to Poland, days after the Pentagon halted a planned rotation of 4,000 soldiers as part of a broader review of US force deployments in Europe.
Washington has repeatedly called on NATO members to increase defense spending and assume a greater share of the alliance’s defense burden, prompting some allies to seek stronger and more permanent security arrangements.
US-Poland Defense Ties
The idea of a permanent US military base in Poland was already proposed during Trump’s first term, when Warsaw sought to establish a permanent installation and offered up to $2 billion to help fund the project.
Although the proposal was never approved, Poland currently hosts 10,000 US troops, a permanent US Army garrison, and a missile defense facility.
Poland has also sought to strengthen security ties with Washington through its military modernization program.
The country spends more than 4 percent of its GDP on defense and is purchasing US-made systems, including M1A2 Abrams tanks, HIMARS rocket launchers, AH-64 Apache helicopters, and F-35 fighter jets.
