Rauma Shipyard has launched the second Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvette for the Finnish Navy as the entire four-ship class enters the full production series.
The launch comes less than a year after the corvette began construction. It also follows after the lead ship was launched in May 2025, which is now undergoing outfitting.
Meanwhile, the third corvette had its keel-laying ceremony as the fourth corvette began production in January 2026.
The Pohjanmaa-class corvettes are slated to enter service with the navy from 2027 to 2029.
Securing the Baltic Sea
Under the Squadron 2020 program, Finland ordered four Pohjanmaa-class corvettes to replace seven aging vessels from the Rauma-class and Hämeenmaa-class, and to secure its critical sea lines of communication and underwater infrastructure in the harsh Baltic Sea.
The 117-meter (384-foot) long Pohjanmaa-class corvette can accommodate more than 70 sailors as well as a maritime helicopter.
Powered by a 38,000-horsepower engine, it can operate at a top speed of 26 knots (48 kilometers/30 miles per hour) and achieve ranges of up to 6,500 kilometers (4,039 miles).
It can remain at sea for up to 14 days.
Each vessel is armed with Gabriel anti-ship missiles from Israel Aerospace Industries, Torped 47 lightweight torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare from Saab, and RIM-162 ESSM surface-to-air missiles for air defense.
The Pohjanmaa-class corvettes are also equipped with remote weapon systems, naval guns, decoy systems, and an electronic warfare suite.
